The body of a man was found in Nescopeck State Park in Dennison Township on Friday afternoon, almost a day into a massive effort to locate a missing hunter.

A search crew identified the hunter as 58-year-old Anthony Yacowatz of Pardeesville. A park ranger would not confirm that it was Yacowatz who was found around 3:30 p.m. Friday near Grouse Trail, about one mile from the Nescopeck State Park Office and Education Center off Honey Hole Road.

Search and rescue teams began looking for Yacowatz after he was reported missing Thursday around 6:30 p.m., according to Dustin Drew, assistant park ranger with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.

“A park ranger spotted a man and Yacowatz’s teenaged son walking out of a wooded area and asked if everything was OK,” Drew said. “The teen replied that his father was hunting with them and they were unable to locate him.”

Park rangers do not consider the death suspicious. The Department of Conservation and Natural Resources called Pennsylvania State Police troopers from the Hazleton barracks in to investigate.

A Luzerne County coroner was called to the scene before the body was removed early Friday night.

Dozens of volunteers, members of the Civil Air Patrol, trained dogs and a state police helicopter searched for several hours Thursday and Friday before the body was discovered Friday afternoon.

The Salvation Army was on hand to provide hot drinks and sandwiches for the search teams.
