as measured from the Prime Meridian at Greenwich, England
The official military, aviation and navigational designation for Greenwich is ZULU.
Military Time
Military or Universal time (or the 24 hour clock) is easy to understand after a little practice. There is no AM or PM. The day is divided into 24, 1 hour segments, just like civilian time.
The simplest and quickest way to calculate military time when you are just learning it is to understand that all numbers higher than 1200 constitute PM. All numbers 1200 and lower are simply AM.
So the next time you are watching a movie and a soldier says its "2235 hours" use simple subtraction to find civilian time:
2235 - 1200 = 10:35 PM

Zulu
|
In commnications, Military Time is often used with Zulu because it eliminates the need to add location information to your message. Using Zulu does that automatically.
Without Military Time and Zulu, you would have to say something like "We need to have everyone start at 5am New York time". The person receiving your communication would have to know what time zone New York is in, and his/her own time zone in order to know long to wait until start time.
Using Military Time and Zulu, you would say "We need to have everyone start at 1000 Zulu". If the person receiving the message knows his/her time zone is Zulu +5 and it is 1500 hours, then that person knows that he/she needs to start right away.
