Group 3 Search & Rescue Exercise (SAR EX)
Dates: Saturday, 26 June (air and ground) and Sunday, 27 June, 2004 (Ground only)
Time: Registration 0800 sharp
Place: Reading Airport, Squadron 811 building on Saturday, Hawk Mountain on Sunday

AIR CREWS:
Check-In is at 0800. Your crew will be briefing at the time specified in the exercise plan, which will be e-mailed separately (it is too large for the listserver).

This is an opportunity for everyone to fly together as fully qualified crews competing in a graded environment. It will follow the profile of searching for targets in a designated quarter grid for 1 hr; then an ELT search for 30 min; then directing a ground team to the ELT for 30 min. Points will be weighted heavily this time for identifying and locating targets w/in 1000', making communications calls, and properly filling out the CAPF 104. This will require three person crews to search the areas properly. You will be working with four different ground teams in four separate grids.

You will be expected to have a completed CAPF104 (frontside) ready for the brief, a completed Wt and Balance form, and a completed Risk Assessment form. Your crew will be graded based on the criteria in the Explan and a final score awarded after return from the mission. You are tasked to determine a search pattern that will allow you to fully search the 1/4 grid assigned to you in the Explan. There will be multiple targets in the search area for you to identify and mark on top for GPS coordinates. Accuracy counts - if your mark on the target is more than 1000' off you will lose points. Your additional tasking involves first locating a Practice ELT and then directing a UDF team to the practice ELT. You will see from the scoring matrix that these are all timed events with points deducted for running over time as well as bonus points for finishing early in the ELT and UDFT phase. Any questions concerning air crews assignments should be directed to Maj John Edsall (215-300-3923).

GROUND TEAM MEMBERS:
We will be sending four teams out (one will be prestaged at Mt. Pocono). They will be working with the aircraft as well as doing other ground team duties.

GROUND TEAM TRAINING:
We will be conducting training on ground team tasks all day Saturday under the direction of Lt. Mark Lindenmoyer, Expert Ranger. Anyone holding at least a 101 card with GES is encouraged to participate.

NON 101 CARD HOLDERS:
A class will be held in General Emergency Services for everyone without a 101 card. This will be held in the classroom of the squadron building.

MISSION STAFF POSITIONS:
We will accommodate those who have already asked for training the AOBD and GBD positions.

ACCOMMODATIONS:
We will be using the Squadron 811 building and grounds on Saturday for training. Unfortuately, the Airport Authority has recently banned the use of the airport grounds for overnight accommodations. However, all those who wish to stay overnight will go the short distance to Hawk Mountain for overnight stay. While Sq. 811 personnel will have lunch available for sale, dinner on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday for those staying at Hawk will be your responsibility. Please be sure to pack all the appropriate gear for a weekend.

DIRECTIONS TO READING AIRPORT:
From the PA Turnpike: Take the Morgantown exit. Proceed North on Rte. 176 to 422 West. 422 W will merge with 222 North for several miles. Keep following the signs for Reading. When 422 splits from 222, stay on 222 North. Watch for the Reading Airport exit (Rte. 183). After exiting, make a right onto Rte. 183. Go just one block, to the traffic light. There is a large building on the far left corner with the letters GPU. Make a left on that street, Van Reed. At this point, follow the signs for the Reading Air Museum. When you come to Arnold Street, make a right and go a short distance to the Squadron building on the right, next to the Air Museum.

Any question, please call Lt Col Devlin (215-264-4779) or Lt Col Blinebury (215-260-3411.
